Chapter Eleven
âYou know who killed Michelle?â I gasped.
âWell, not for definite,â Lana admitted.
âOh,â I said, disappointed.
âBut I heard one of the guests threatening her,â Lana went on.
âWow! Who? What happened?â I asked.
âI think he was the best man,â said Lana. âHe had a bit of a thin, ratty face.â
I knew exactly who Lana meant.
âColin Pritchard,â I said. âI remember him.â
âAnyway,â said Lana. âI was bringing some burger meals out to the bar, and Michelle and Colin were in the corridor. Colin was saying, âYouâd better get what you owe us, with interest, or elseâ.â
âWhat did Michelle say?â I asked.
âShe was all apologetic. âI will. I promise. I just need a bit of time to get on my feetâ.â Lana told me. âThen they saw me and walked off.â
âDid you tell the police about this?â
âOf course,â said Lana.
I left the castle to drive home. I really wanted to discuss my new information with Jen and Herb, but neither of them were answering their phone, so I left messages and turned my attention to my other problem.
âWhatâs going on with the witch hunter, Wolfie?â I asked.
âI got rid of it,â he said. âSmacked it right in the chops. Easy peasy.â
I laughed. âI canât believe that silly little low-key spell I used to open the bedroom door alerted it so quickly,â I said. âIt had to have been following us.â
âI didnât sense it,â said Wolfie.
âYou complained that all the flowers were messing with your nose at the wedding,â I suggested. âMaybeâ¦â
âBut there were no flowers today,â Wolfie interrupted.
I could see this was bothering him.
âHerb seemed to think there had been a really powerful witch at the castle back in the 1600s,â I said.
âYes,â said Wolfie. âSeraphina. Iâd never heard that name before.â
âMaybe itâs the magic she infused into the castle which is still attracting them to it,â I suggested.
âMaybe.â
âWhen we get home, Iâll see what I can find on the internet about the castle,â I told him.
So, after weâd eaten, I sat down at my laptop.
âOK, this is what it says about The Invasion of Tidewater,â I said. I read the article out to Wolfie. ââIn 1605, Tidewater was invaded by Cedric of Thalassia, who crossed the English Channel with his fleet of ships to land at the harbour inlet of the River Tide. A long and bloodied conflict followed. An army of well-trained and well-equipped soldiers drawn from neighbouring counties defended Tidewater, and it appeared they would defeat the invaders, who were a rag-tag bunch of mercenaries. However, during the fight, a terrible storm blew up, turning the battlefield into a quagmire. The English soldiers, weighed down with heavy armour, struggled in the mud. Lightning struck the metal armour of the soldiers, and soon the Thalassians were victorious. Cedric built Tidewater Castle to be his base.ââ
âIâll bet it was the witch that Cedric brought with him who conjured up the âterrible stormâ. It sounds too convenient to me,â commented Wolfie. âDoes it say anything about Seraphina?â
A search for witchcraft in the 1600s made grim reading.
